Food and Drink

Arabic countries have a great tradition of wonderful hospitality and amazing food.  Bahrain has some top class 5 star hotels, right through to budget eateries.  You can dine on a wide range of cuisines, including Arabic (Bahraini, Lebanese, Persian and others) to Indian, American, Mexican, Italian, French, Japanese, and many more.

One tradition across the Gulf region is that of Friday Brunch.  Most of the large hotels will have a ‘brunch’, which commonly starts at 12.30pm and lasts all afternoon.  For a set price, there is a large (and we mean LARGE!) buffet, inclusive drinks (sometimes including alcohol) and often children’s entertainment.  These really are lovely events, and worth experiencing.

Pork products are generally not available in restaurants and supermarkets, although some of the latter have small, clearly marked but screened off ‘pork rooms’.

Alcohol is not generally available, although it is in some hotels and a few restaurants, and in a couple of specialist shops for home consumption.

Local delicacies include shawarma (rolled kebab sandwiches); machboos (spiced rice with lamb); mixed grills; and many sweet desserts. These types of food can be picked up very cheaply from one of the many local Arabic/Bahraini restaurants. http://mumsinbahrain.net/Shopping.html
